Pitbull Attacks 3 Children, Goes On Barbershop Rampage

Your Black World Reports:
"Get at me dog" is urban slanguage that can be heard in many barbershops around the world, but in one shop in Rhode Island, "Get away from me dog" was probably more accurate.
After being released from his home accidentally by a minor child, a pitbull took off on a rampage through his neighborhood --- attacking three children along the way ---, before exploding into Christian Reyes' barbershop in Providence, sending patrons scurrying for cover.
The heroic shop owner fearlessly struck the pitbull trying to protect his customers with his bare hands, telling WPRI, "We didn't have nothing to hit him with." Reyes suffered minor bites on his hands.
The dog's owner says that though the violent animal had attacked an intruder in the past, they did not think he was capable of being so aggressive.
A 13 year-old, 11 year-old, and another child were sent to the hospital and have since been released.
Animal control has quarantined the animal for ten days to ensure it doesn't have rabies, and the dog's owner has signed over all rights, saying that he no longer wants the animal in his home.
Animal control has already said that the dog will be euthanized after the 10 day quarantine is over.

Monkey See, Monkey Do: Racist Fan Throws Banana At Black Hockey Player
Your Black World Reports:Wayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyers was greeted by a banana peel just before a shot attempt on a shootout point Thursday at the Labatt Centre in Ontario, Canada.
"I caught it from the side of my eye. It was a banana. Hopefully, that wasn't directed towards me being black," Simmonds said. "Because if it was, that's just somebody being ignorant."
The NHL (National Hockey League) has a history of racism. In 1999, San Jose Sharks player Bryan Marchment admitted to calling Donald Brashear a "big monkey". In 2000, Chris Simon of the Washington Capitols was suspended for using racial insults towards Edmonton Oilers player Mike Grier. In 2002 Carolina Hurricanes goalie Kevin Weekes was also the victim of the "banana peel" treatment.
"When you're a black man playing in a predominately white man's sport, you've got to come to expect things like this," Simmonds continues.
By all accounts, Simmonds is handling the situation with "class," because he chooses not to "make a big fuss" about it; though, based on the history of racism in the NHL, a little "fuss" might be exactly what's needed.
To Beat A Winter Cold, The CDC Recommends A Flu Shot

By: Shani K. Collins, Your Black World
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that Americans get a flu shot. The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases reports a constant rise in the number of Americans who receive the flu vaccine each year. In 2010, 130.9 million Americans, or 43 percent of the U.S. population, received a flu shot, according to Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC.
Frieden added, “We can say with certainly that the best way to protect yourself, your family and your community is to get a flu shot. For most people, the flu makes them sick for a few days, but for others — especially children, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions — it can be life-threatening.”
Four types of flu shots are available: The traditional vaccine, a nasal spray, a high-dose injection designed for people aged 65 and older, and a new “intradermal” vaccine that is administered just under the skin with a small needle, MSNBC reports. In addition to having the flu vaccine, the CDC recommends hand washing, and covering a cough to prevent getting the virus.

Troy Davis Execution Date Set For Sept. 21
By Julius Kane
Troy Davis, the highest profile inmate on Georgia's death row, is only 13 days away from being executed. Despite multiple appeals and international support, Georgia officials are moving forward with the execution. Davis was convicted in 1991 of gunning down 27 year old Mark Mcphaile, an off duty Savannah police officer, in a Burger King Parking Lot. Mcphaile was working security when he heard the screams of a homeless man nearby. When he approached the scene he was shot and killed. At the time witnesses identified Troy Davis as the shooter.
Davis however, has always maintained his innocence; convincing the likes of Pope Benedict XVI and former President Jimmy Carter to lobby on his behalf. The Federal Court gave Davis the chance to clear his name by giving him a new appeal. However, for some reason, during the hearing Davis chose not to take the stand or call on witnesses who had previously given written statements on his behalf. The court then ruled his new evidence as flimsy at best. That prompted the Supreme Court to refuse to hear Davis' case. Many witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured by police to testify and identify Davis as the shooter. Visit Julius Kane At: theunexpurgatedtruth.blogspot.com
Welfare Drug Law Challenged By ACLU
By Julius Kane
A lawsuit was filed Tuesday In Federal Court on behalf of a Navy veteran who refused to take a drug test. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is calling the law unconstitutional and filed suit on behalf of Luis Lebron. Lebron, the 35 year old father of one, applied for state assistance to help take care of his son while he finished college. However, Florida's new law requires all welfare recipients or any government assistance to pass a mandatory drug test before they can receive benefits. Lebron felt the law violated his privacy.
Dozens of states have proposed similar laws for welfare recipients however Florida is the only state to pass such a law. Since July, approximately 1,500-2,000 welfare recipients have paid $30-$35 to be tested. According to state records 2.5 tested positive for illegal substances. Recipients are required to pay for the drug test themselves but are reimbursed if the results are negative. In 1999 the state of Michigan passed a similar law aimed at welfare reform but was halted by a judge 5 weeks later. Then eventually ruled unconstitutional. Experts say Florida's new law violates unreasonable searches and will end up the same way. Visit Julius Kane at theunexpurgatedtruth.blogspot.com

Mexican Car wash Workers Demanding Fair Treatment
By Julius Kane
LA car wash workers are picketing a work environment they describe as "dangerous, unhealthy, and full of wage theft." Thousands of immigrant workers are organizing to stop their bosses "inhumane" treatment on the job. Car wash employees are claiming physical and verbal abuses are happening on a daily basis throughout the car wash industry. Mexican women are claiming sexual harassment and constant threats from owners and managers, while other employees are gathering and demanding gloves and masks to protect themselves from sulfuric acid used to clean customer rims.Their list of demands also include; higher wages, health care, scheduled breaks and break rooms. Workers currently say they are forced to sit and eat next to buckets full of chemicals and dirty wash water. Many complain about making less then minimum wage and work strictly for tips.
Is this a modern day sweat shop or slave labor? The Community Labor Environmental Action Network (C.L.E.A.N) seems to think so. This Los Angeles based group took on the task of helping car wash workers organize. "Don't be afraid. Expose the abuse," they go from car wash to car wash telling employees. Already there have been marches and picketing in front of dozens of car washes throughout
Los Angeles. Are we destined to see car wash workers with health care cards and 401k? Either way it appears the cost to get your rims cleaned is about to go up. Visit Julius Kane At: theunexpurgatedtruth.blogspot.com, facebook.com/juliuskane and Twitter.com/juliuskane.
Increasing Number Of Europeans Mentally Ill
By Julius Kane
A large study out of Europe recently revealed that almost 40% of Europeans suffer from mental illness. The study released September 5 by the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) also concluded that only a third of them are receiving the help they need. Hans Ulrich Wittchen, Director of The institute of Clinical Psychology And Psychotherapy at Germany's Dresden University was lead investigator during the three year study.
The team of researchers who conducted the study wanted policy makers to "devise ways to identify the potential patients early"- to change the projected cost in treating the mentally ill. A 2005 study found that it would cost $386 billion euros ($555 billion dollars) a year back in '05 to treat the mentally ill. However this recent study suggests the cost would be considerably more. The study also concluded that millions of Europeans suffered from mental and neurological disorders such as depression, anxiety, addiction and schizophrenia.
An estimated 38.2% of the EU's population -- or 164.8 million people -- suffers from a mental disorder.
The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that by 2020 depression will be the leading contributor to the global burden of disease across all ages. Visit Julius Kane at: theunexpurgatedtruth.blogspot.com, Facebook.com/juliuskane, and Twitter.com/juliuskane.
