After last year's catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, many Haitians were displace from their homes. As a result, some relocated to the United States.
Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they are granting qualified Haitian immigrants an additional 18 months to dwell and hold occupations legally in the United States since extensive rebuilding is still taking place in Haiti. Initially, residence was only granted to immigrants who came to the states right after the earthquake. According to The Grio, however, Department of Homeland Security officials released a statement saying, "Haitian immigrants who have 'continuously resided' in the U.S. since January 12, 2011, will also be eligible for the protection."
Currently, there are at least 48,000 Haitians who now have protected status.
