When authorities found the bodies of 4 year old Piya and 8 year old jiya their mother told police a ghost was responsible for killing her children. The North Carolina woman herself was at Mission Hospital in Asheville recovering from deep, self inflicted hatchet wounds. According to police, 33 year old Naiyana Patel repeatedly hit herself in the head with the same hatchet she used to brutally kill her own children. The attacks were reported by the father, Lalji Patel, in a call to 911 around 10 a.m.. The family had only lived in the small house for a month or two. The parents are from India, and the children were born in the United States. Patel has been charged with first degree murder. The investigation is still in its early stages and a motive had not yet been established in the gruesome killings. From The Unexpurgated Truth
