Centering on the topic of gentrification and police brutality within the United States, the event will discuss and breakdown the human rights violations people find themselves subjected to daily. Also aiming to dismantle negative stereotypes within hip-hop, the project focuses on widening awareness.
“The Black August Hip-Hop Project has been a great way to communicate the importance of supporting political prisoners in the U.S. and the issues our people face locally and all around the globe,” Black August Co-Chair Tamir Z. Brown wrote in a statement. “It has cleaned up some of the negativity associated with hip-hop and shows that we are self-determined and self sufficient.”
Primarily focused on issues that directly affect the urban and black communities within North America, the event officials have also organized various concerts in international countries like Cuba, South Africa, Brazil, and Venezuela.
Known for featuring strong line-ups of hip-hop speakers like Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Erykah Badu. Fat Joe, Mos Def and dead prez, this year’s show is expected to have a few surprise guests.
The Black August Hip-Hop Project is scheduled to take place Sunday, August 31 at the Nokia Theater in Manhattan.
